Learn to see what makes exceptional work exceptional
with Amy Kennedy
Friday, 9 October
8am-10.30am AEDT
A Sydney Craft Week 2026 Event
Exceptional work isn't created through technique alone.
It's about learning to recognise the subtle decisions,
ways of thinking and approaches that give work depth
and unmistakable presence. This workshop will help you
learn to recognise those qualities,
and begin applying them to your own practice.
This workshop is for you. . .
-
You want to develop stronger judgement about your own work.
-
You want to understand why some artworks feel more compelling and resolved than others.
-
You want to move beyond instinct alone and develop a deeper understanding of what makes exceptional work.
-
You want to learn from outstanding artworks across disciplines, not just your own.
-
You want to challenge the way you think about making.
Together we'll explore. . .
01
How slowing down and looking closely can reveal what can often be overlooked.
02
The thinking and approaches that shape compelling, enduring work.
03
How artistic voice develops through lineage, constraints and intentional practice.
04
How artists move beyond technical skill to create meaning and mood.
05
Ways to apply these insights in your own studio practice.
Most workshops focus on making. This one focuses on seeing and developing awareness.
By slowing down and closely examining exceptional artworks, you'll begin to recognise patterns of thinking and approaches that can strengthen your own practice.
Presented by
Amy Kennedy
Amy Kennedy is an Australian ceramic artist and artist mentor dedicated to helping visual artists create exceptional work.
At the heart of her practice is a simple question: what makes one artwork good, and another truly exceptional?
Over the past 25 years, Amy has built an internationally recognised ceramics practice, exhibiting widely and receiving artist residencies, grants, awards and significant public acquisitions, including by the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Alongside her own practice, Amy has spent years working closely with artists around the world, helping them deepen their ideas, strengthen their practice and create work that is both exceptional and valued.
Drawing on decades of making, observing and analysing art, Amy has developed a unique approach to understanding what gives exceptional work its power. In this live training, she'll share artworks from her personal collection to explore the thinking and approaches that shape exceptional work, and how those insights can inform your own practice.
“I have begun to understand my work more which in turn helps me know more what the next right step in my making might be.”
